About the Winter Carnival
Winter Carnival is a community tradition, held each year at Saranac Lake, New York. In November 1896, Pontiac Club was formed to break winter’s chill of snow-covered Adirondack Mountains and to promote outdoor sports and winter games. The club organized a one-day fancy-dress winter carnival in 1897 and the event expanded into the Pontiac Club Carnival in 1898. The Winter Carnival wasn’t held during chunks of years in the 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s. The event was revived during the winter of 1947-48 and has been held annually since then.
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival has grown into a 10-day festival attended by thousands of people. Organized by an all-volunteer group called the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, the event features sports, parades, performances, movie nights, fireworks, and so much more. Sporting activities include ski racing, snowshoeing, snowflake volleyball, hockey games, skating races, and frisbee games. Moreover, the centerpiece of the Winter Carnival is the Ice Palace which is built out of blocks cut from the ice of Lake Flower. In 2024, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival will take place from Friday, February 2 to Sunday, February 11.
