About Ohio Sauerkraut Festival
Ohio Sauerkraut Festival is always held on the second full weekend of October at the historic Main Street in Downtown Waynesville, Ohio. It is a fun weekend where the community comes together to celebrate the tradition. The festival also serves as a fundraiser for many of the area’s civic and charitable groups.
Ohio Sauerkraut Festival is a family-friendly event that features handicraft vendors, live entertainment, and everything sauerkraut (including sauerkraut sundaes, fudge, brownies, cookies, pies, breads, and pizzas). The festival also offers plenty of foods without kraut – so if you are not a sauerkraut fan, you wouldn’t starve.
It all began in 1970, when Waynesville retail merchants were planning to hold a sidewalk sale – and it was suggested to serve sauerkraut dinner as part of the event. That fall, Waynesville hosted its first Sauerkraut Festival on October 3, 1970. The first festival was a success and some 528 pounds of sauerkraut was served to about 1500 visitors.
Over the years, Ohio Sauerkraut Festival has grown in size and scope to become an event with a national reputation that draws tens of thousands of people each year and serves tons of sauerkraut. In 2024, the two-day Ohio Sauerkraut Festival will take place on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.
