Ashura 2024

Ashura is observed every year on 10th Muharram(first month of Islamic Calendar). Ashura is observed by Muslims to commemorate and mourn the martyrdom of Hussain Ibne Ali and his companions that took place on 10th Muharram 61 Hijri (680 AD).

Hussain, also written as Husayn, was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and son Ali Ibne Abi Talib. The army of Yazeed bin Muawia brutally massacred the small party led by Hussain Ibne Ali in the desert of Karbala, near Kufa.

Muslims observe this day by remembering Hussain and his companions, participating in processions, narrating the events that took place in Karbala, mourning, performing Latmiya, distributing food, and offering prayers. People following other religions and ideologies can observe this day by reading about Hussain and the battle of Karbala.
