International Friendship Day is observed annually on the 30th of July to celebrate friendship. In some countries, Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. This day was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2011 with the idea that friendship between people, cultures, and countries can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
To mark Friendship Day the United Nations encourages civil society groups, governments, and international organizations to hold activities, events, and initiatives that contribute towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations, solidarity, mutual understanding, and reconciliation.
