World Turtle Day is celebrated annually on May 23rd. It was founded in 1990 for the protection of all species of turtle and tortoise. Turtles belong to a group of reptiles called Testudines. There are over 356 species of turtles. The length of their shells ranges from 4 inches to 7 feet. About half of all turtle species are threatened with extinction. The purpose of this day is to increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.
