Global Handwashing Day is celebrated every year on October 15. The purpose of this observance is to raise awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap. A large number of the population don’t have access to basic handwashing facilities. Washing hands properly can help prevent illnesses and infections such as diarrhea, skin and eye infections, and respiratory infections.
Did you know about 1.8 million children under the age of five die from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia each year? Handwashing with soap can protect about 1 of every 3 children who get sick with diarrhea and about 1 of every 5 children with respiratory infections like pneumonia. Global Handwashing Day is observed to raise awareness and emphasize the need to take action to increase access to proper handwashing facilities.
