As the name suggests this awesome food holiday is dedicated to celebrating America’s all-time favorite dessert. In 1984 President Ronald Regan designated the 3rd Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. This holiday provides an opportunity to indulge without any guilt. There is no better way to celebrate this day than eating your favorite ice cream. You can also enjoy ice cream cake, ice cream sandwich, and ice cream milkshake with friends. Making ice cream at home can be a great activity. Try mixing some of your favorite flavors and surprise yourself with the outcome.
National Ice Cream Day will be celebrated on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Coffee Ice Cream Recipe
Here is how you can prepare coffee ice cream at home and enjoy this sweet goodness with your family on National Ice Cream Day.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- 1 ½ cups whole coffee beans
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 egg yolks
- Ice
- Salt
Method
Heat the milk, whole coffee beans, sugar, a pinch of salt, and a half cup of cream in a medium saucepan on low heat until it is quite warm, but not boiling. While heating, stir occasionally with a spoon. Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 50-60 minutes.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Reheat the milk and coffee beans mixture on low to medium heat. Again, make sure it is hot but not boiling. Slowly pour the heated mixture on the egg yolks, whisking constantly.
Heat the milk, eggs, and coffee mixture over medium heat until it thickens. While heating, stir the mixture continuously and keep scraping the bottom as you stir. Heat until the mixture coats the spatula.
Pour the mixture through the strainer into a separate bowl.
Mix the remaining 1 cup cream and vanilla extract into the mixture. Stir until it cools and place in the refrigerator so the mixture gets chilled. Then process it in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you want to make coffee ice cream without an ice cream maker
Instead of following the last step of the above recipe, please follow the steps given below.
Fill a large bowl halfway up with ice. Stir a bunch of salt into the ice. Nest a medium-sized metal bowl into the large bowl filled with ice. Pour the remaining 1 cup of cream into the medium-sized metal bowl. Add the mixture(after you have chilled it in a freezer or refrigerator for a few minutes) and vanilla essence to the cream. Beat on the lowest setting with a hand mixer for 10 minutes.
Place the ice cream mixture in a freezer for about an hour. Beat the semi-frozen ice cream mixture again for 3-5 minutes, while the mixture bowl sits in a large bowl filled with ice.
Now your ice cream mixture is ready to go in the freezer for 10 to 12 hours or until completely frozen.
